(SEOUL, SOUTH KOREA – July 23, 2024) HD Hyundai will be cooperating with universities in the U.S. and Korea to nurture talents and develop the shipbuilding industry.

HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering, HD Hyundai’s shipbuilding holding company announced that it signed an MOU on Academic and Scientific Cooperation between the University of Michigan(UM) and Seoul National University(SNU) to nurture maritime talents and had a ceremonial event on Monday, 22nd (EST).

The ceremony was held at Macomb Community College located in Michigan, USA, and was attended by Tech Advisor of HD Hyundai, Shin Jong Gye, Professor of Engineering Practice at the University of Michigan University, Jonathan Page, and U.S. officials including the U.S. Secretary of the Navy, Carlos Del Toro, Michigan Governor Gretchen E. Whitmer, and Senator Gary Peters.

Based on the agreement, HD Hyundai and SNU will be seeking opportunities to academically cooperate with UM on joint research projects and education, and the introduction of internship programs. The parties are also looking into expanding cooperation to other universities in the U.S. such as Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (Virginia Tech).

This agreement was requested by Secretary Carlos Del Toro since visiting the HD Hyundai Heavy Industries Ulsan shipyard earlier this February. He expressed astonishment when inspecting the yard and witnessing the company’s shipbuilding capabilities in person.

Secretary Carlos Del Toro shared during the ceremony that “Developing the talented marine engineers and naval architects the Nation needs requires the collaboration of world-class faculty as well as innovation in curricula for marine design. Towards that end, we are excited to have just facilitated a new educational partnership between the University of Michigan, Seoul National University and HD Hyundai Heavy Industries. This partnership will provide invaluable opportunities for civilian and navy engineers to learn in HD Hyundai’s world-class shipyards.”

Shin Jong Gye, Tech Advisor of HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering stated, “This academic and scientific cooperation between the U.S. and Korea will not only strengthen the competence of the U.S. shipbuilding industry but also have a positive impact on future businesses such as the U.S. naval MRO. Using our technological prowess and experience, we will do our part in playing a pivotal role in developing the shipbuilding industry of both countries.“

Meanwhile, HD Hyundai recently signed the Master Ship Repair Agreement (MSRA) with the U.S. Navy’s Naval Supply Systems Command for ship MRO. With this agreement, HD Hyundai will be qualified to bid for MRO projects for U.S. Navy combat ships and Military Sealift Command support vessels over the next five years.
