(Seoul, South Korea – Sep. 29, 2024) HD Hyundai is spurring business cooperation on future naval ships with the U.S. Navy.

HD Hyundai today announced that a delegation of high-level officials of the U.S. Navy, responsible for naval shipbuilding and maintenance, recently visited HD Hyundai’s Global R&D Center (GRC) located in Gyeonggi Province, Korea. During their visit, they discussed potential areas of cooperation including that of future warships, and eco-friendly and digital technologies.

A total of thirteen high-ranking officials from the U.S. Navy and the U.S. Embassy to Korea visited, including Rear Admiral Thomas J. Anderson, the Program Executive Officer of Ships, and Rear Admiral William Greene, the Commander of the Navy Regional Maintenance Center and Director of Surface Ship Maintenance, Modernization, and Sustainment.

Rear Admiral Thomas J. Anderson previously visited HD Hyundai Heavy Industries’ shipyard in Ulsan, Korea, last February and inspected HD Hyundai’s naval shipbuilding capabilities, including its latest Aegis destroyer, Jeongjo the Great, and the Chungnam-class frigate.

Joo Won-ho, head of the Special Ship Business at HD Hyundai Heavy Industries, and Chang Kwang-pil, Senior Executive Vice President and head of the Future Technology Center at HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering welcomed the delegation and gave a tour of the Digital Convergence Center and Digital Insight Center located inside GRC. They also provided a brief explanation of HD Hyundai’s world class technological prowess in green and digital technologies.

HD Hyundai emphasized its technological competence on warship solutions based on artificial intelligence, hybrid propulsion ships, and virtual navigation with digital twin technology, along with an explanation of its main R&D focus areas, and MRO (Maintenance, Repair, and Operation) strategies that can be applied to naval warships all over the world.

“With the world’s number one shipbuilding capabilities, we hope this will open up more opportunities on naval shipbuilding and MRO businesses with the U.S.,” said Joo Won-ho, head of the Special Ship Business at HD Hyundai Heavy Industries.

“We are thankful to HD Hyundai for hosting us today at their impressive maritime R&D facility and the productive dialogue on where the U.S. and Korea have the opportunity to collaborate in shipbuilding for mutual benefit,” said Rear Admiral Thomas J. Anderson.

Meanwhile, HD Hyundai is strengthening its naval cooperation with the United States. Philip Goldberg, U.S. Ambassador to Korea, visited HD Hyundai Heavy Industries’ Ulsan shipyard last July to discuss naval business opportunities. In addition, Carlos Del Toro, the U.S. Secretary of the Navy, also visited Ulsan last February to observe firsthand the company’s naval ships including the latest Aegis destroyer, Jeongjo the Great, which in turn lead to an MOU signing in July to foster talents for the shipbuilding industry among HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering, the University of Michigan in the United States, and Seoul National University (SNU).
