HD Hyundai Heavy Industries delivered the lead offshore patrol vessel (OPV) to the Philippine Navy ahead of schedule.
HD Hyundai Heavy Industries announced on Monday, Feb. 23 that it successfully delivered BRP Rajah Sulayman, the first vessel among six OPVs ordered by the Philippine Navy, nearly five months earlier than the contractual delivery date.
The delivered offshore patrol vessel has been equipped with an acoustic detection system for anti-submarine operations and features dedicated spaces for various mission modules, enabling effective deployment across a wide range of operating environments, including maritime surveillance, maritime security missions, and military operations.
By delivering a state-of-the-art naval vessel on a significantly accelerated schedule, HD Hyundai Heavy Industries has been able to contribute to the Philippine Navy’s early force build-up.
In naval shipbuilding, delivery schedules are considered a key indicator of a shipbuilder’s capabilities, as timely delivery is directly linked to a navy’s force build-up and have a direct impact on a nation’s ability to sustain its defense readiness.
In addition, ahead of the vessel’s delivery, HD Hyundai Heavy Industries provided a pre-delivery training program to support the Philippine Navy in operating the ship safely and reliably immediately upon delivery.
An official from HD Hyundai Heavy Industries said, “The early delivery of the Philippine Navy’s OPV has demonstrated both HD Hyundai Heavy Industries’ reliability and competitive edge in meeting delivery schedules,” and added, “We will continue to contribute to the modernization of the Philippine Navy and the stable operation of its forces through the construction and delivery of the follow-on vessels.”
HD Hyundai Heavy Industries has participated in the Philippine Navy’s modernization program since 2016, securing orders for a total of 12 naval vessels, including frigates and OPVs. Starting with the early delivery of the first frigate, Jose Rizal, by one month, the company has delivered five vessels ahead of schedule to date, supporting the Philippine Navy’s fleet modernization efforts
